01: Gearing UP

Notes on getting setup.

Windows Setup

1. Get VirtualBox at their downloads page. In 2024 the version was 7.0.x but should work with any version after that.
2. Run the installer and do the usual next next next.
3. If the installer says it's "not responding" just hit Retry to keep it going.
4. You can check the box to "Run VirtualBox" now or just run it later from the start menu.
5. Get Alpine Linux from their downloads. You want the Extended version for x86.
6. This will download a file named alpine-extended-3.x.x-x86.iso where the x is another number. You should be fine with any .iso file that has 3.x.x for the version.
7. An .iso file is an old format for CDs that's still for installing operating systems. We'll tell VirtualBox to use it when installing the virtual machine.
8. Make sure this file is in your Downloads directory.

With that you're ready to watch the video to learn how to install this into a virtual machine to continue with the lessons.

macOS Setup

3. You can check the box to "Run VirtualBox" now or just run it later from the start menu.
4. Get Alpine Linux from their downloads. You want the Extended version for x86.
